Side Story 4: The Fall Of Biqiril (Part 2)

Entry 3. AY1.60

I met the librarian for the first time today. She's beautiful. She's as symmetrical as the most complex of arrays and more interesting to boot. If only I had known that before today... but oh well. I have all the time in the world to pluck up the courage to ask her on a date.

That is not a challenge I am currently up to though. I could barely get out the words to ask her about a book that the library was lacking. I managed it, and then babbled for twenty minutes about Mccaanith’s theory of Order. I feel like such a fool! I doubt I'm going to be able to focus on work anymore, at least today. General Ashdon will not be impressed, but I've earned a day off. The interweb project has been growing at an excellent rate, and now we can store images and send them across the slates. The problem I am having is that we are limited by the size of the child slate. If only there was some way to compress the information the slates saw, then retrieve sections of the compression from the parent slate... I'm going to have to mull it over for a while. The General said there would be another Primer coming to Aledia to help further the project in general, and that once he arrives we will be given the real mission briefing on what Project Alamis actually is. I guess I will have to just wait until then.

Entry 4. AY1.130

Wow. I have not written in here in a long time! I haven't had much free time to order my thoughts though, so please forgive me. Since the last update I wrote not much has changed. I still haven't spoken to the beautiful librarian, the General is still confused by my ideas and I still haven't solved the compression issue. I think I am close on the last one though, but it's such a tenuous answer. Why in the tower did I decide to transfer everything into strings of letters and numbers and then short and long pulses? I must be going mad.

In other news, the second Primer should be arriving tomorrow. Apparently he got nominated and shunted here after serving his year in office. This place must be mighty important to the King if we aren't even allowed the customary year break after our work.

Oh! Just remembered about my flops in the last 70 days. I've had a few... less than stellar ideas since I got stuck on the interweb compression issue. The first dud was a device that turned water into a stimulant drink. It seemed like a great idea at first, but it turns out that the stimulant I created, I call it Kiffin, makes people prone to heart attacks if they have it neat. The third death kinda shut that project down. Then there was the purification arrays that purified everything in five metres of them. Thought that would be great for doctors, but it turns out that there are a lot of things on the our bodies that we kind of don't want purified. The wounds of the victims subjects weren't getting infected anymore, but they also stopped digesting food properly and kinda died of malnourishment. That was two months down the drain. Such a good idea too!

Oh well. There's always next week.

Entry 5. AY1.160

So the new Primer arrived. I can't believe they made Qema Firus the Primer last year. Did no one read his treatise on array intelligences? It was a nightmare that was badly stitched together by what ifs and maybes! It should have never been published. Just because he is fifth in line to the throne doesn't mean you need to bring academia down a notch to make him look good. I think he thinks similarly of me though. I heard him call me a ‘mad alchemist’ to one of his cronies. Like that is even a bad thing.

We finally found out what Alamis is today. It's a project to create some sort of super soldier out of arrays. Ugh. Such a cliché. Either way, I have two courses that I can go on here. Either I make an array soldier to fight instead of a person, or I make a person into something more with arrays. I wonder if it's possible to manufacture Saints... Or perhaps I should make an array soldier with a mind like one Qema said wasn't possible just to spite him. This is a hard decision, but perhaps I can work on both paths at the same time.

Okay two plans, 1. To look into making a mind with arrays. 2. To look into making a Saint with arrays. Perhaps for number two I could put the subject in a mana compression chamber. I've heard that the only difference between Saints and normal people is their mana is denser. Could this process be forced? Will update soon.

Entry 6. AY.1.161

Note to self. Putting a mouse in a mana compression chamber at two times normality leads to a lot of bloody mouse everywhere. This may be harder than it looked.
